Notes From Pastor Anthony’s Desk; December 31, 2006

In a small town in Eastern Kentucky, there was a "Nativity Scene" that showed great skill and talent had gone into creating it. One small feature bothered me. The three wise men were wearing firemen's helmets. Totally unable to come up with a reason or explanation, I left. I stopped at the store on the edge of town, I asked the lady behind the counter about the helmets. She exploded into a rage, yelling at me, "You stupid Yankees never do read the Bible!" I assured her that I did, but simply couldn’t recall anything about firemen in the Bible.

She jerked her Bible from behind the counter and ruffled through some pages, and finally jabbed her finger at a passage. Sticking it in my face she said “See, it says right here, the three wise man came from afar."

I thought that was a pretty cute little story but it also will show us how we can take the word of God out of context and make it something that it is not if we are not careful. Sometimes it is very tempting to cause the Bible to say and mean just what we want it to. If we are not careful we can manipulate The Word to suit ourselves and lose out on the true meaning that God intended with a certain scripture.

As the New Year approaches, let us all resolve to dig deeper into the word of God, allowing it to change us for the glory of God and not try and change it for the benefit of our personal self.

I pray that you have a prosperous and eventful New Year.

In my prayers - Pastor Anthony
