Notes From Pastor Anthony’s Desk; October 22, 2006

It finally happened, the Hermit Crabs that the boys bought while on vacation at Virginia Beach finally died Friday afternoon. As I walked into the door Friday evening Caeden came rushing down the hall filling me in on all the gruesome details. As I made my way to Evan’s room I was met by Holly and Evan, both had somber looks on their faces. Evan is very tender hearted and of course was slightly bothered by the passing of his pet. Caeden on the other hand had already gotten his little 4-year-old mind on something else. Holly informed me that I had to properly dispose of the crab’s remains for the boy’s sake and so off we go, Evan, Caeden, myself and the carcasses of our former pets to find a place of proper disposal. But you know a funny thing happened on the way back to the house, the mood changed. Evan and Caeden started to discuss what they could buy to replace their deceased friends, when they would be able to go to the pet store and how much they thought it would cost. A once sad and pitiful time all at once turned into hope for a new pet and friend. It seemed as if the mourning was over as soon as the issue was disposed of.

Then it hit me, how much better would our lives be if we as adults would handle the issues of our past like 2 of my boys did. Instead of setting around and crying all night and making a fuss over something they couldn’t change in the first place, they began to get on with their lives.

Many times the church lives to far in the past. We will allow former conflicts or past defeats to hinder us from having victory today or in the future.  Evan and Caeden was able to get on with their lives not because they didn’t care about their deceased pets but because they had hope that their father was going to purchase them something to take the crab’s place.

Sometimes Church, we just have to have faith that our Heavenly Father is going to heal our wounds and mend our broken spirits and we must stop thinking about the defeats or disappointments of yesterday and trust in the victory of God for tomorrow.

Hope you all have a great Homecoming.

Pastor Anthony
