Notes From Pastor Anthony’s Desk; December 18, 2005

“God is not real to most of us because of the condition of our consciousness. He is closer to our minds every moment than our own thoughts. He is nearer to our hearts than our own feelings. He is more intimate with our wills than our most vigorous decisions. If we are not aware of Him, it is not because He is not with us. It is, in part, because our consciousness is so under the sway of other interests that it cannot turn to Him with the loving attention which might soon discern Him.”

Albert Edward Day

When I first read that quote it moved me. When I read it a second time it awakened me. And now that I have read it for the third, fourth and even fifth time, I have realized that it is beginning to change me. It has helped me to see clearly the fact that if my soul is not in relationship with God that the fault lies totally within me. I have no one else to blame; it is me that controls my eternal destiny. The decisions that I make or fail to make, my attitude, my language, my thought life, it all depends on me.

The longer I serve the Lord the more I realize that God is forever with me but if I am not careful I may not always be with God. I find myself at times getting so troubled about the choices that others make that if I am not cautious I become so consumed with them that I am swayed from the presence of God myself. Like Mr. Day said, we can get so wrapped up in other interests that God becomes the least of our thoughts.

I see more and more everyday the struggle that people have making Godly choices. They want to serve God and have all the benefits of being His child, but they want to live their life their way at the same time. That is not the way that God works. If we are not careful we can get in the frame of thinking that because we are not conscious of God, then God is not conscious of us and that is simply not true. As a matter of fact the Word of God tells us that we cannot escape the presence of God. No matter where we go, God is there (Psalms 139).

That is a sobering thought; the knowledge that even if we are not with God, God is still with us. That is why He will be a righteous judge.
