Notes From Pastor Anthony’s Desk; November 6, 2005

This past week our nation mourned the death of a true hero in American history, Rosa Parks. In 1955 on Dec. 1st this very brave lady refused to give up her seat to a white man on a Montgomery, Alabama bus. Her courageous act was a giant step in the history of Blacks all across the nation.

The world has seen many injustices and wrongs. Slavery is certainly one of the worst of these. It's one thing to have a moment of anger or malice toward someone else. It is quite another thing to systematically and methodically benefit from the suffering of another.

As much as we want to think that we are free from any type of slavery in this great land of ours we have to recognize the fact that we are all slaves. Sometimes we think we are strong and invincible, but the truth is we are all slaves to something. We all worship or uphold something or someone as most important. If you worship money, you are a slave to greed and no amount will ever be enough. If you worship sex, you are a slave to erotic encounters that weaken and damage you. If you worship popularity, you are a slave to everyone around you, pretending to be who they want to gain their acceptance and admiration.

Since we are slaves, it would behoove us to choose carefully who we worship, because that will determine our life's pursuit. If we worship sin, we will pursue that which will destroy us. If we worship Jesus Christ, we will pursue that which matures us and makes us whole. God has given us the choice of whom or what we will serve.

We have to guard our hearts so that we will not worship the wrong things. Proverbs 4:23 says, "Guard your heart above all else, for it is the source of life" (Holman CSB). We are slaves, but we get to choose our master. We can choose sin or we can choose Jesus Christ. I choose Jesus. How about you?

Who or what are you serving today, the answer may very well determine your eternal destiny.

In my prayers - Pastor Anthony
