Notes From Pastor Anthony’s Desk; |

Back
in the late 80’s or early 90’s there was a song out by a group called Timbuk 3 entitled “My Future so Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades”. It was a catchy little tune that
talked about a guy in school that was doing pretty well for himself
and felt as if he had his whole life ahead of him and what was in store looked
pretty good from his stand point. Hence the title, “My Future so Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades”. Now if you were to read the lyrics
to this cute but annoying little ditty you would easy see that this gentleman
was basing his life’s success on temporal things, on things that could very
easily be here one day and gone the next. He was basing his future on what he
could accomplish and not what God was going to do or wanted to do in his life. Bad idea, right? Solomon tells us not to lean or trust in
our own understanding, but in all things trust whole-heartedly in God and God
alone. Now
you may be wondering what in the world made your Pastor think of a song from
the late 80’s and how does that relate to us here at Stanton First Church of
God. Well, I really don’t guess that it does. But this past week I accompanied
3 different groups that were assembled from this Church to go out and witness
to and invite children to our upcoming VBS. In one of our groups I was paired
up with Dustin Watkins and my oldest boy Evan and our mission field for the
evening was Baker Apartments. After a couple of doors I was approached by two
sets of eager eyes and two willing hearts as Dustin said, “Bro. “A” I think
I know what to say, give me a hand full of those papers and me and Evan will go
and do this other building.” As I stood and watched my son and a young man
that feels about like he is mine go door to door in that complex and invite
people to Church, I could not help but think, “If we will keep our hands
wrapped tightly around God’s, then the future of our Church looks pretty good”. If
you will take just a moment to look around you and see that some of us are
getting older and we have more days behind us than we do ahead of us and we
need to do all that we can to get our future ready to handle things when the
time comes. The thought of the future of the Church used to worry me greatly,
but now I can’t help but sing, “My Future so Bright, I Gotta
Wear Shades””. In
my prayers, Pastor
Anthony
