Notes From Pastor Anthony’s Desk; May 22, 2005

Little Johnny and his family were having Sunday dinner at his

Grandmother's house. Everyone was seated around the table as the food was being served. When little Johnny received his plate, he started eating right away. “Johnny wait until we say our prayer."

“I don't have to," The boy replied. “Of course, you do," his mother insisted. "We say a prayer, before eating, at our house."

“That's our house," Johnny explained. "But this is Grandma's house and she knows how to cook!

AS I read that little joke this past week I began to laugh out loud at the remarks that were made by that little boy because I could hear my soon to be three year old make that same kind of statement in a few more years.

But deep down in my spirit there was a part of me that began to cry because I realize that this little boy’s idea of prayer is the same idea that many so-called Christians have today. There are many in our world that just calls on God in prayer when we think that we are going to be in trouble or we are having a bad time. Our communication with God should be something that we do no matter what type of situation we are facing in our present life. He is not a spare tire, or an emergency exit or plan B when all else has failed. He is God, He should be the first and last in all that we are and do. And unless He is, we will find ourselves setting beside the road way of life with a flat tire on our spiritual vehicle and have not a spare to our name.

Why do you pray, because you have to, because you’re expected to, or is it because you realize that prayer is your avenue to communication with God and you can’t live without it?

In my prayers,

Pastor Anthony
